About Me

Meet D.L. Randle

I grew up in Canmore, Alberta, surrounded by stunning mountains like Rundle Mountain and Ha Ling Peak. Writing has been a lifelong passion, and I studied at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. I won the Best Pitch at the Banff TV Festival for "Hypoxia" and worked on films like Cool Runnings and Legends of the Fall. After years in film and TV, I returned to prose, cherishing the freedom and magic of writing novels. My next book is about a boy with a psychic connection to animals at a shelter. Check out my work on Amazon, including "The Golden Ass of 1124." Be kind, and remember, we’re all up to our asses in alligators.

Hello there, here's some info about me. I grew up in Canmore, Alberta, Canada which looks like this:

Canmore Alberta

How lucky was I? These mountains: Rundle Mountain Ha Ling's Peak, Mount Lady Macdonald, Grotto Mountain, were the granite sentinels standing watch over us. My sisters and I thought 'The Three Sisters' was named after us. We wondered how they knew about us.

I walked through this forest to school. It was mysterious and beautiful and the site of many story conceptions. In 2024 we scattered my mom's (Irene) ashes here. Happy she's home.

Forest in Canmore

When my brothers and sisters grew up, the 60's, there were hardly any people in Canmore and we sometimes rode our horses into town, kept them in the backyard overnight and rode out the next day. Sigh...

Forest Trees in Canmore

I've been writing all my life. I can't help it. I must write. Most writers feel unsettled and restless if they aren't writing. I studied at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Summer Writing School with W.O. Mitchell, whom I got to know well because my Mom and I worked at the Centre. We cleaned the building where the writers stayed. We spent many afternoons in the lounge with the writers while Mom played the piano for them. I won the Best Pitch New Players at the Banff TV Festival with Natalie Selinger, Aaron Salus (Strut Creative, Calgary) and Cheryl Kroeker, for 'Hypoxia', a pilot I wrote about a high mountain town (big surprise) where strange things happen. I've written small projects: a murder mystery fundraiser, copywriting for companies like Shell, MC scripts for dance shows. I worked in film and tv for ten years on such projects as: Cool Runnings, Legends of the Fall, Rescue 911, Angel Flight Down, One More Mountain, The Edge, Children of the Dust. I wrote a lot of screenplays that were almost produced. The 'almost produced' will drive you crazy. A few years back I decided I'd been too long away from prose. I missed the wordplay on the page, the autonomy of creating your own work, and the very magical moments when characters take on a life of their own and do things you didn't know they were going to do.

Future Works

There are lots of projects on the boards. The next novel is a 180 turn from 'ME! ME! ME! The King Who Shouldn't Be' It is a family novel about a young boy who, while working as a volunteer at an animal shelter, discovers he has a psychic connection with the animals in his care. Thanks for visiting. Check out my contact page and pre-orders at Amazon for 'ME! ME! ME! The King Who Shouldn't Be.' And my 'Favourite Films' journals for movie lovers.
